Andrea Fischer Newman is Senior Vice President-Government Affairs at Northwest Airlines and chairwoman of the University of Michigan Board of Regents. At Northwest, she has responsibility for the Company’s international, federal, state and local government affairs. Prior to this appointment, Newman was Vice President, State and Local Affairs.
Prior to joining Northwest Airlines she was a senior partner at the Detroit law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock, and Stone, the Department of Defense as Special Counsel to the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Logistics, the White House as Deputy Assistant to then Vice President George Bush and the Washington, D.C. law firm of Patton, Boggs. Newman’s legal specialty is government contracts.
Newman is a 1983 graduate of the George Washington University National Law Center, and an honors graduate of the University of Michigan (1979).
She is a member of the Federal Service Impasses Panel, appointed by President George W. Bush in February 2002. The panel resolves labor disputes between the federal government and its unions.
Prior to her elected service on the University of Michigan board, Newman was a member of the Oakland University Board of Trustees, appointed by Governor John Engler. Newman serves on the Boards of the Congressional Economic Leadership Institute (CELI) and the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL) and as a Vice President of the Detroit Economic Club.
Newman is a former Director of the Michigan State Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce. She served as co-chairman of the Governors Purchasing Reform Task Force from 1993-1994 and was a Board Member of the Michigan Strategic Fund from 1987-1991.
She served as a Vice Chair of the George W. Bush for President campaign in Michigan and as a co-chair of the Bush for President Finance Committee in Michigan in the 2000 Presidential election. In 2004, Newman was a “Pioneer” fundraiser for the Bush/Cheney re-election campaign.
