Cartwright, who served as president of Kent State University from 1991 until 2006, has had a career distinguished by innovative teaching, pioneering research and national leadership.  Cartwright has excellent experience in enrollment management, strategic planning and budgeting, a familiarity with Ohio public universities and illustrious higher education experience overall.  Previously, she was vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of California at Davis and dean for undergraduate programs and vice provost of The Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Cartwright is a member of Cleveland Tomorrow, the Greater Akron Chamber, Cleveland Urban League and the Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education.  She co-chaired Ohio’s Technology in Education Committee, which developed the state’s master plan for educational technology, and is a member of the Governor’s Commission on Higher Education and the Economy.  Dr. Cartwright chaired the board of directors of the American Association for Higher Education and served on the board of the American Council on Education and the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.

She is a former chairwoman of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Executive Committee and sits on the Board of Trustees of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the executive board of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Center for Research Libraries board of directors.  In 2003, she was appointed to the American Council on Education Commission on Women in Higher Education.

Dr. Cartwright’s numerous honors include induction into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility.

She holds doctoral and master’s degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.
