William W. Asbury
Vice President Emeritus for Student Affairs,Pennsylvania State University
Bill Asbury is in his second official year of retirement after serving as a staff member at Penn State University for 27 years in four separate capacities; Vice President for Student Affairs, Executive Assistant to the President, Assistant to the Provost, and as an Affirmative Action officer. The William W. Asbury Award is given annually to outstanding leaders in Penn State student organizations.
Since his retirement in 2003, Asbury has retained or taken on positions as president of the International Leadership Council of Golden Key International Honor Society, advisor to the Penn State Chapter of Golden Key, director of the Robert D. Lynch Student Leadership Development Institute, president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, and instructor at the Community Academy for Life Long Learning.
While at Penn State, Asbury also served as board president of Centre Home Care, president of the Student Affairs Council of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, president of the State College Kiwanis Club, president of the Pennsylvania Black Conference on Higher Education, and member of the foundation board of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
At Kent State University, he was an honor student who earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology while lettering in both football and track and field. He was named to All-Mid-American Conference and All-American teams in football, and inducted into the Kent State Hall of Fame.
Asbury enjoyed a three-year career in the National Football League with the Pittsburgh Steelers following his graduation from Kent State University. Asbury returned to Kent State and received a M.A. in Sociology in 1973. He then entered university administration as the director of Human Resource Utilization at Kent State University for two years. He also worked as a contract compliance officer for the City of Akron and was an account executive for the Sanford Rose executive search firm in Akron.
