NCAA Division I Leadership Council Considers Cost-Savings Measures

At its most recent meeting, the NCAA Division I Leadership Council discussed a variety of cost-saving measures that would be broad enough to help both larger and smaller institutions. However, the NCAA News reported that the board members “also believed that the topic needed a more expansive approach to make real headway toward reducing expenses.”

Issues noted included an understanding that some athletic departments are more highly subsidized by institutions while others have been more directly affected by the economic downturn. That disparity in both resource level and pain from the economic climate must be considered as part of the cost-savings review, the group concluded.

The Council requested costs-saving measures either on through rules that affect campuses via championships, travel, and season modifications, or through savings in the national office in staffing and programs. The group requested further information and data by October, including how much cost savings can be expected from specific actions.
