A cheap shot or more than that?

At the end of the second quarter in this year’s Gator Bowl, Marcus Vick of Virginia Tech stepped on the knee of Elvis Dumervil, the University of Louisville’s star defensive back. Vick said it was an accident, but his own quarterbacks coach, Kevin Rogers, called it inexcusable, implying strongly that Vick had intentionally stomped on Dumervil’s knee--a potentially career-ending move. According to multiple media accounts, Rogers said he strongly considered benching Vick, even though no penalty was called. Should he have? Is there a point when an athlete should be taken off the field by his own team for unsportsmanlike conduct? Virginia Tech’s athletics director suspended Vick, who previously had several run-ins with the law, from the team indefinitely.
